Overnight Tuna Casserole
By Addie
Shirley also shares this update of an old-time favorite—comforting tuna casserole. "This may be the easiest tuna macaroni casserole ever," she informs. "I prepare it the night before, and then just pop in the microwave. There's no need to precook the macaroni, so there's really no fuss."
Ingredients
- 1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed cream of celery soup, undiluted
- 1 cup milk
- 1 can (6 ounces) tuna, drained
- 1 cup uncooked elbow macaroni
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1/2 cup chopped green onions
- 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese, divided
Preparation
Step 1
In a bowl, combine soup and milk until smooth. Add the tuna, macaroni, peas, onions and 3/4 cup cheese; mix well.
Pour into a greased 2-qt. microwave-safe dish. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Microwave, covered, on high for 10-12 minutes or until bubbly. Uncover; sprinkle with remaining cheese and let stand for 5 minutes or until melted. Yield: 4 servings.
Editor's Note: This recipe was tested in a 1,100-watt microwave.
MY NOTES:
Saute some bread crumbs in butter in a skillet and toss on top of finished casserole. Run it under the broiler for a few minutes to brown, if desired. Also, I felt this could use a bit more liquid, as it tends to dry out quickly while eating it. Very tasty though - and hardly and trouble!

REVIEWS:
I have used this recipe repeatedly, and my family loves it. My husband doesn't like tuna, so I often substitute cooked chicken, and that works nicely too.
I actually don't care for tuna casserole myself, so I've not tasted this one. But I've made it many, many times for the residents of my mom's adult foster home and they love it! I love how easy it is an that it cooks in the microwave -- great for summertime when you just don't want to heat up the house. And while I don't do tuna, I'll admit -- this one smells great! My mom says it's delicious, too! One tip I would give is to cook your frozen peas before putting it in the casserole -- otherwise they end up not cooking all the way through. Sometimes I use mixed vegetables instead of peas, too. And I just go ahead and mix the whole cup of cheese into the casserole, rather than sprinkling any on top.
I first got this recipe from a cooking class I took over 35 years age. My family loves it! I have put it together in the morning and it works just fine too. My daughter makes it at least once a week for her family because her husband just loves it. I get many recipe requests when I take it to our camping club potlucks.
This can also be baked in the oven and you do not need to precook the noodles - they will cook in the sauce.
Easiest and the best as far as Tuna Casserole goes!
Good casserole, and very easy for those who want to exploit the microwave! I think I'd try adding more tuna next time -- one little can didn't seem like enough for 4 servings.
This recipe turned out better than I expected. As far as tuna casserole goes, it was just fine. Good flavor and very easy to make. That was my favorite part, the simplicity of the meal. When I can come home and just throw something in the oven, I'm happy. Try it.
I cannot believe how easy this was to make and how tasty it turned out. I did as one reviewer suggested and added some garlic to it; I chopped up a couple cloves. I also cooked it in the oven since I don't like to use the microwave much. I'll be making this again.
Super easy, the kids love it, husband likes it, what could be better? I keep unintentionally forgetting to add the onions, but do add some additional seasoning to my family's taste (Salt, pepper, garlic powder, parsley). This is a weeknight winner in my book especially with Lent fast approaching!
This was a quick and easy casserole! I didn't have any green onions, so I just left those out and it tasted just fine. I am not a big fan of tuna, but I ate it up and even ate leftovers the next day!
