Ingredients

  • MAPLE FROSTING:
  • 1/2 c butter
  • 3/4 c packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 t baking soda
  • 1/4 t salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 c maple syrup
  • 1 t vanilla
  • 1/4 t maple flavoring
  • 1 c whole wheat flour
  • 1-1/4 c flour
  • 1-1/2 c sifted powdered sugar
  • 2 T butter softened
  • 3 T pure maple syrup
  • extra maple syrup if needed

Preparation

Step 1

In medium bowl, beat butter with electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add brown sugar, baking soda, and salt. Beat until combined scraping bowl. Beat in egg, maple syrup,vanilla, and maple flavoring until combined. Beat in whole wheat flour and as much of the other flour as you can with the mixer. Using a wooden spoon, stir in any remaining flour. Divide dough in half. Cover and refrigerate about 2 hours or until easy to handle.
On lightly floured surface, roll dough half at a time to 1/8" thick. Cut with 2-1/2" to 3" leaf shape cookie cutter. On an ungreased baking sheet arrange cutouts 1" apart.
Bake at 375 degrees for 5-7 minutes or until bottoms are light brown. Cool on wire racks.
FROSTING:
In medium bowl beat 1/2c sifted powdered sugar and 2T butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until combined. Beat in 3T maple syrup. Beat in 1c additional powdered sugar. Add additional maple syrup 1t at a time to make frosting a spreading consistency.
