French Toast Surprise by domesticdiva

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf french bread (day old)
  • 6-8 larges eggs
  • 1- 1 -1/4" cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • assorted jams (raspberry, blackberry, strawberry, etc)
  • 1- 2 sticks butter
  • powdered sugar
  • syrup (maple, flavored or reg. pancake syrup)

Preparation

Step 1

Prep:
Slice french bread loaf into generous 1" slices.
Make a middle cut in each slice but not completely through, just enough to create a pocket.
I usually make a cut at least half way down. Into the pocket spoon approx one tbsp. jam.

heat to medium a large skillet.

beat eggs with milk, vanilla and sugar

Cook:

melt 1-2 tbsp. butter in heated skillet.
dip bread slices into egg mixture.
place in heated skillet with melted butter.
continue ti add butter-small amounts at a time as you turn slices.
cook approx. 2 minutes per side.
test for doneness-if slices feel too soft continue cooking another minute or so.
remove slices to serving platter. sprinkle generously
with powdered sugar and serve with bacon, sausage or ham.
