Red Velvet Cake (Meem's Recipe)

Ingredients

  • CAKE:
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp cocoa
  • 1/4 cup red food coloring
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • ...........................
  • FROSTING:
  • 3 Tbsp flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup soft oleo (not melted)
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Cake:
Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Combine separately cocoa and food coloring. Add to cream mixture. Add alternately the following: buttermilk, vanilla, flour, salt. Combine baking soda and vinegar in separate bowl and then add to cream mixture. Blend. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes in 2 round pans or 9 x 13 pan.

Frosting:
Combine and cook flour, milk, and salt until thick. Cool (Do not refrigerate - causes frosting to separate). Beat oleo and sugar until creamy. Add milk/flour mixture. Beat until thick like whipped cream. Add vanilla.
