Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1-1/4 cups cocoa powder
  • 1-1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 3/4 cup hot water
  • 1 gallon milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, optional
  • or
  • 1.5 cups whipping cream
  • 1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk (can also half evaporated milk or coconut milk)
  • 6 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups of chocolate chips (milk chocolate OR semi-sweet depending on how sweet you like it)

Preparation

Step 1

In large saucepan, combine sugar, cocoa and salt. Add hot water slowly, mixing well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture boils. Boil and stir 2 minutes. Add milk; heat to serving temperature, stirring occasionally. DO NOT boil. Remove from heat; add vanilla, cinnamon if desired, and whip with a whisk. Serve hot, with whipped cream or marshmallows, if desired. To kick the presentation up a notch, serve with a cinnamon stick in each mug. This recipe can be doubled and kept in crockpot for easier serving to large groups.

Option 2:
Stir together the whipping cream, milk, vanilla, and chocolate chips in a crockpot. Cover and cook on low for 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until mixture is hot and chocolate chips are melted. Stir again before serving. Garnish as desired. Serves 6-8
