What's a softie, you ask? It's a cross between a cookie and a muffin top -- delicious, tasty, and... well, SOFT! Plus HG softies have MUCH lower calorie and fat counts than conventional cookies...

  • 1

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (not packed)
  • 2 tbsp. granulated white sugar
  • 2 tbsp. light whipped butter or light buttery spread,
  • room temperature
  • 2 tbsp. no-sugar-added applesauce
  • 2 tbsp. fat-free liquid egg substitute
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup whole-wheat flour
  • 1/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 3 tbsp. mini semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with nonstick spray.

In a medium bowl, thoroughly whisk brown sugar, white sugar, butter, applesauce, egg substitute, and vanilla extract.

Add flour, baking powder, and salt, and stir until smooth. Fold in oats and chocolate chips.

Spoon batter onto the sheet in 6 evenly spaced mounds. Use the back of a spoon to spread and flatten into 3-inch circles.

Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of a softie comes out clean, about 10 minutes. Enjoy!

1/6th of recipe (1 softie): 157 calories, 4.5g fat, 111mg sodium, 27g carbs, 2.5g fiber, 14.5g sugars, 3g protein

wonderful recipes for low calorie foods but so tasty

There isn't one ingredient in this recipe that has any place in my weight loss and fitness program.

For those who can eat them and still lose weight, my hat's off to you! Enjoy!

Beluomo- I am slightly confused as to why things like egg substitute or vanilla extract would find no place in your weight loss program, or for that matter whole wheat flour or oatmeal. All of these are very healthy items and can be great tools for staying healthy in weight loss. Having variety and allowing yourself a treat are very important to loosing weight the healthy way and keeping it off.

How is one cookie at 157 calories good for any-ones trip down losing weight alley? And 111 mg of sodium is NOT good for any-ones health, ex-specially for one cookie!!!

Better than conventional cookies (I suppose) but GEEZ look at that sugar content!!!! That'll keep your blood sugar spiking, forcing your body to release insulin, store fat, and make you want to eat more once the insulin forces your blood sugar to drop.

Plus: fat, whole eggs, and real butter are not the enemies to weight loss! Processed "granulated sugar" and even brown sugar, though, are . . . however, I suppose if you MUST have a "cheat" these aren't the worst things you could treat yourself to . . .

I could quite easily fit one of these cookies into my healthy eating plan. They are a very reasonable cheat.

And 111 mg of sodium is not a lot. How many mg in a "healthy" whole-wheat English muffin? Try 250: http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-oroweat-100-percent-w hole-wheat-i86472

Hungry Girl has been a big part in helping me lose 106 pounds over the last 14 months. It has been (and still is) a journey for me and I am by no means a perfect "clean" eater - just trying to eat healthier.

But I do enjoy how these weekly posts always bring out the "self righteous" posters!

Just because someone disagrees that a recipe here is not healthy or good for weight loss does not make them self righteous. Most of us indulge in a treat occasionally. But its delusional to think that recipe above is either healthful or good for weight loss. Nothing wrong with having it as a treat - just know it for what it is and don't tell yourself it's a "healthy" treat.

Let's break it down. It's got two types of refined sugar in it - sugar is toxic to the body - there are many cookie recipes that use natural sweetners like honey/date paste (or up the applesauce) which are much better for you. It uses fat-free liquid egg substitute - what??? what is even in that product??? processed foods are the reason why this society is suffering from an obesity epidemic. We need to stop eating processed foods that claim to be sugar-free and fat-free cause they are making us fat!!!! They are not food and the body doesn't know how to digest it. If you don't want to use whole eggs, then use just the egg white as a binder or ground flax seeds or chia seeds etc.

Whole wheat flour - most of us actually have a very hard time digesting the gluten in wheat, causing bloating, gas, other digestive issues, inflammation throughout the body, allergies etc. There are many other gluten-free organic flours you can use in place of this.

Just because someone posted a recipe here doesn't make it healthful. Again - nothing wrong in choosing to eat it - just as long as you really know what it is in it!

This is wonderful! I can even modify is to be gluten-free and use protein powder instead of flower, to make them into energy bars! Thanks so much, love it.

I wish people were not so sanctimonious, please get off the soapbox and throw it away. Life is too short.

Thanks for your great recipes. Not always do they fit in everyone's diet but they do provide us with alternatives to far worst choices. It's raining outside and a good day for baking so off I go! Thanks for sharing!!!

There should be no problem determining what is in it since the recipe is provided above.

I notice that the recipe's author did not include the words "healthy" or "good for weight loss" in the text, either.

You could substitute the white sugar for Stevia (or Truvia), replace the Brown sugar with black strap molasses, and instead of the ss chocolate chips, buy a good quality 82% dark chocholate and chop that up. Alot healthier version of the recipe...with all natural sweetners rather than white sugar....

Just eat a chocolate chip cookie and get over it!

Made these this afternoon..delicious!!!!

I really don't get the problem, these cookies have 3 calories per gram while a standard cookie has 5. If you don't cheat every once and a while then you are not living life, you're just going through the motions.

Of course, I would eat all six in one sitting so, nope not for me :)

I will substitute the following ingredients with the ones I list next to them. Hopefully, the caloric count will plummet as well as the sodium and sugar:

Brown Sugar & White Sugar > Organic Coconut Sugar (Non-GMO)

Butter > Organic Coconut Oil (Non-GMO)

I wish people were not so sanctimonious, please get off the soapbox and throw it away. Life is too short.

Sounds great but Whole Wheat Flour and Oatmeal are a rare treat for me because I eat low starch sources of fiber (usually veggies) and there are too many processed and otherwise not good for me ingredients for me to use. I wonder if there is a healthier version that uses dark chocolate and healthy oils instead of butter and eggs or egg whites instead of egg substitute. If anyone has a suggestion for a healthy butter substitute, let me know and I might try to make some.

Just eat a chocolate chip cookie and get over it!
