My Gramma's Orange Date Cake

This was my grandmother's favorite cake recipe and is similar to a fruitcake in weight when done. It is delicious if you like a very sweet cake. It is also very time consuming to make.

Ingredients

  • 1/6 c Butter
  • 2 c Sugar
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1/2 c Buttermilk
  • 4 c unsifted all purpose flour
  • 14 oz Dates cut in pieces
  • 1 lb Orange candy slices in small pieces
  • 2 c Pecan pieces
  • 1 c Flaked Coconut
  • 1 c Orange juice
  • 1 c Unsifted confectioners sugar

Preparation

Step 1

Cream butter with granulated sugar
Add eggs, one at a time, creaming well after each
Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk
Alternately add buttermilk with 3 1/2 cups flour to creamed mixture
Mix remaining 1/2 cup flour with dates, candy pieces and pecan pieces
Add to batter
Add coconut
pour batter into greased and well floured 10 inch tube pan
Bake at 250 degrees for 3 hours or until cake springs back when lightly pressed.

Combine orange juice and confectioners sugar; mix well
Immediately pour on HOT cake in pan
Let stand overnight.

Can refrigerate up to two weeks.
