- 1 tablespoon(s) brown sugar, plus more for serving
- 1/2 teaspoon(s) pure vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon(s) kosher salt

- 2 tablespoon(s) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- Almonds, for topping
- Chocolate chips, for topping
- Maple syrup, for topping
- Cranberries, for topping and serving
Preparation
Step 1
Generously grease a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker with the shortening.
Add the milk, sugar, vanilla, salt, and 4 cups water. Gently stir in the oats, apples, and butter. Cook, covered, on low until the apples are broken down and the oats are tender, 8 hours (some oatmeal will stick to the slow cooker).
Gently stir the oatmeal, then spoon into bowls. Add additional milk, if desired, and sprinkle with your favorite toppings.
