Ingredients
- Dough
- 4 cups unbleached flour
- 1 1/2 Tbsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 cup solid vegetable shortening (crisco)
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 Tbsp vanilla
- Filling
- 2 cups dried figs
- 2 cups dried dates pitted
- 1 1/2 cups raisins
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup orange marmalade
- 1 1/4 cups walnuts coarsly chopped
- 1 egg white and 1 Tbsp water for wash
- Round colored sprinkles
Preparation
Step 1
Sift the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.
Add sugar and mix well. Cut in shortening with a fork and work the mixture into a coarse cornmeal looking dough.
In a bowl, beat the eggs, milk and vanilla together. Add to flour and work dough with your hands until rough dough forms.
Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes. The dough will be soft. Cut into 4 pieces and wrap each in plastic wrap and chill for 45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees, lightly grease 2 cookie sheets. Grind the figs, dates and raisins in a food processor until coarse, placwe mixture in a bowl, add remaining ingerdients and mix well. It will be thick and sticky.
Roll out dough, using a square or round cookie cutter, cut dough and place on baking sheet. Grab a spoonfull of filling and roll into logs, place in the center of each dough piece. Bring up both sides of the dough and pinch at the top. Brush with egg white, and add sprinkles, bake for 25 minutes or until brown.
