Ingredients

  • ½

    cup sugar

  • cup shortening

  • cup butter

  • ¼

    teaspoon baking soda

  • ¼

    teaspoon salt .

  • 1

    egg

  • cups all-purpose flour

  • Milk (optional)

  • ½

    cup finely chopped walnuts or

  • chocolate-flavored sprinkles

  • (optional)

  • Chocolate, Icing (recipe follows)

Directions

1. In a large bowl beat the sugar, shortening and butter with an electric :mixer on medium speed till mixture is well ,combined. Beat in the baking soda and salt; beat in egg. 2. Beat ill as much of the all-purpose flour as you cap. Stir in the remaining flour till well combined. If necessary, cover and chill dough for about an hour or till easy to handle, 3. Shape dough into 1 inch balls. (Dip the balls in milk and roll the balls in nuts or sprinkles, if you like.) Place on ungreased cookie sheets. Press your thumb into center of each ball. 4, Bake in a 375°F oven 8 minutes or till bottoms are light brown. Cool on wire rack. Prepare icing and spoon into centers of cookies. Makes 42. Chocolate Icing: In a bowl, combine 2 cups sifted powdered sugar, cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla and enough milk (2 to 4 tablespoons) For a spreadable icing.
