French Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 c. water—good and warm
  • 2 T melted margarine
  • 1-1/2 T sugar
  • 1 T salt
  • Mix above ingredients well.
  • Add 1 T yeast and let sit for 10 minutes
  • Add enough flour to make a firm, not sticky dough (about 6 cups).

Preparation

Step 1

Knead well. Let double in size (about one hour.)
Shape into 3 loaves. Sprinkle cornmeal into bottom of baking
pan. Let raise about 15 min. Split tops a touch both ways with
sharp knife. Mix ¼ water and one egg white. Baste bread with brush.
Bake 12 minutes at 375 degree oven. Baste again. Bake 10 min.
Baste. Bake 10 more min. or until done.
