"Congo Bars"

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp granted orange peel
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 (12 oz) cups semisweet chocolate chips

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 F.

Line a 15″ x 10″ jelly-roll pan with foil.
In a large bowl beat together butter, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, orange peel and salt until light and fluffy. Add flour and baking powder, beating until blended. Stir in walnuts and chocolate chips.
Spread batter evenly in foil-lined pan.
Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool in pan. Cut cookies into bars.
Notes

Variation: Substitute 1 cup (6 oz) butterscotch-flavor pieces and 1 cup (6 oz) semisweet chocolate chips for 2 cups (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips.
