Apple Doughnuts

Ingredients

  • 5 c. flour ¼ c. shortening
  • 4 t. baking powder 1 ½ c. sugar
  • 1 t. baking soda 3 eggs
  • 2 t. salt 1 c. grated raw apple
  • 1 t. nutmeg ½ c. buttermilk
  • 1 t. cinnamon 1 t. vanilla
  • ¼ t. mace Vegetable oil

Preparation

Step 1

Mix and sift together first 7 ingredients. Cream
shortening, sugar, and eggs until smooth. Add
vanilla, apples, and buttermilk. Mix well. Add flour
mixture 1 cup at a time, beating until smooth after each addition. Chill dough at least 2 hrs. Turn out on well- floured board. Roll out dough ½” thick. Cut with 2 ½” doughnut cutter. Heat oil to 375 degrees. Fry 1 min. each side. Drain.
