Poppy Seed Bread (from Brian Winter)

Brian made this for me when we were at KU together. I think I was studying for a final and he brought it over to Watkins Hall where I lived. He had learned to make it when he had breakfast duty at his hall, which perhaps explains the large quantities. The recipe makes 2 large loaves.

Ingredients

  • Glaze:
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 1/8 cups oil
  • 2 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp poppy seed
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp almond flavoring
  • 1 1/2 tsp butter flavoring
  • 1/2 tsp butter flavoring
  • 1/2 tsp almond flavoring
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F / 180 degrees C. Mix ingredients 1-2 minutes and pour into two large lightly greased pans. Bake 40-50 minutes. Remove from pans. When cool, mix glaze and brush over tops of loaves.
