Ingredients

  • 1 clove garlic
  • 5 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 teaspoons lime juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery salt
  • 2 medium very ripe red heirloom tomatoes, halved
  • 1 1/2 ounces vodka
  • 1 tablespoon pepper bacon, chopped and crisp-cooked
  • 1/2 teaspoon Asian chili sauce (Sriracha)
  • 1 tomato slice
  • 1 center leaf romaine
  • 1 slice crisp cooked peppered bacon

Step 1

In a cocktail shaker, combine garlic, basil, lime juice and celery salt. Using a muddler or wooden spoon, mash mixture to combine. Add the halved tomatoes and muddle until smooth and well incorporated. Add vodka, bacon, chili sauce, and ice to fill. Cover; shake well for 20 to 30 seconds.

Strain mixture through a wire mesh strainer over a liquid measuring cup. Using the back of a spoon, press out all the juices. Discard solids.

Pour mixture into an ice-filled glass. Add tomato slices. garnish with romaine lettuce and bacon.

To coat glass rims, rum rim of glass with lime wedge. Place celery salt and paprika in a shallow dish and dip rim of glass into mixture.

* If you don't own a cocktail shaker or muddler, use a large glass jar with lid and a wooden spoon to mash the tomatoes.

Virgin Muddled Mary

For a nonalcoholic version, make as directed through step 3, omitting the vodka. Stir in 1 1/2 ounces lemon-flavored sparkling water.
