Red Velvet Cake

Ingredients

  • 3 tsp cocoa
  • 1/2 oz. red food coloring
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vinegar

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degree. Spray a Bundt pan with non-stick spray.

In large bowl, make paste with cocoa and food coloring. Cream in shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well. Add vanilla.

In separate bowl, sift together flour and salt. Slowly add flour to cocoa mixture, alternating with buttermilk.

Dissolve baking soda in vinegar, then add to batter, blending well.

Bake in Bundt pan for 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Serve with whipped topping.


Lynn's Recipe:
Same ingredients. Bake in a 9x13 pan at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes.

Frosting:

1 cup milk
1/3 cup flour
pinch of salt

Mix ingredients in a sauce pan on the stove until thick. Set aside to cool in pan.

1 cup sugar
1 stick butter
1/2 cup Crisco
1 teaspoon vanilla

Beat together ingredients until fluffy.
Gradually add cooled cream sauce (it will be rather thick). Beat well.

Spread over cooled cake.
