Removing deodorant/perspiration stains

By

Dear Heloise: Help! Any advice for getting underarm stains from deodorant/perspiration out of men’s shirts? Thanks.

Yes, I do have some helpful hints for you and my readers to take care of this unsightly problem. According to the experts at the Drycleaning and Laundry Institute, stains can occur with prolonged exposure to deodorants and perspiration. Here are some hints for how to clean stains and prevent them in the future:

* Before washing, soak the garment (especially the underarm area) in an enzyme detergent or presoak.

* Wash shirt in the hottest water that’s safe for the fabric.

* Wash shirt as soon as possible -- don’t let it “cure.”

* Wearing the garment again before washing can cause buildup, so only wear it once.

* Try not to overuse deodorant, and let it DRY before putting clothing on.

Stains are just a part of life, but we can deal with them. Find ways to care for clothing and remove stains in Heloise’s Handy Stain Guide for Clothing. To order, just send $5 and a long, self-addressed, stamped (65 cents) envelope to: Heloise/Stain Guide, P.O. Box 795001, San Antonio, TX 78279-5001. Have a mystery stain? Apply prewash spray and rub into the stain. Wash as usual after all traces of the stain are removed.
