Aunt Jeanne's (Hober) Red Velvet Cake

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c shortening
  • 1 1/2 c sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1-2 oz red food coloring
  • 1 tsp cocoa
  • 2 1/2 c cake flour (sifted)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 c buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease and flour to 8in pans.

Cream shortening and sugar together. Add eggs & food coloring. Sift flour, baking soda and cocoa together and add to mixture. Add buttermilk, vinegar and vanilla. Beat until blended.

Bake for 30 minutes.

Once cooled slice each layer in half so there will be 4 layers. Top with cream cheese frosting.
