Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 ounce red food coloring
  • 3 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tbsp. white vinegar

Step 1

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease & flour 3 8-inch pans or use cupcake liners.
In a large bowl, cream butter with sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix food coloring with cocoa & add to mixture.
Add flour alternately with buttermilk. Add vanilla & salt.
Mix baking soda with vinegar & gently stir into mixture. Do not overmix.
Divide batter into pans & bake for 25 minutes. Allow to cool.
If making cupcakes, bake for about 8 minutes, then check frequently for doneness - don't overbake.

Top with cream cheese icing.
