Salisbury Steak 1 Picture

  • Meat Mixture:
  • 2 lb. ground beef
  • 3/4-1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 2 tsps ground dry mustard
  • 1 pkg of beef base
  • 3 dashes Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 eggs
  • Gravy:
  • 1 large onion sliced paper thin
  • 1 large can sliced mushrooms, drained well
  • 1-1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine (if you do not want to use wine, increase broth to 2 cups)
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp butter

Preparation time 10mins
Cooking time 45mins

Step 1

Meat Mixture:
Combine all ingredients and blend till combined. If too wet, add more bread crumbs.
Note: beef base is what I used, if you don't have it, use a bouillon cube crumbled or add beef broth (about 3 tbsp))
Shape into oval patties. You can make lines across meat to give appearance of "steak".

In large skillet (I used a cast iron skillet), heat over medium high heat the butter and olive oil. Add patties to pan when pan is heated, do not overcrowd meat. Cook over medium high heat; about 5 minutes per side. Remove to plate and continue cooking.

Reduce heat to medium and add mushrooms and onions. Cook and stir them for at least 20 minutes until golden and soft but do not burn them. Sprinkle flour over top and mix and cook additional 2 minutes.

Add in broth, wine, salt and pepper to taste. If you want add some Kitchen Bouquet to add deeper color and flavor.

Top with patties and cook for additional 10 minutes.
