Ingredients

  • Cake:

  • cups sugar

  • ½

    cup shortening (½ Crisco and ½ marjoram)

    eggs

  • 1

    ounce red food coloring added with 1 ounce water

  • 1

    teaspoon salt

  • 1

    teaspoon cocoa

  • 1

    cup buttermilk

  • cups cake flour

  • 1

    teaspoon vanilla

  • 1

    teaspoon soda

  • 1

    Tablespoon vinegar

  • Frosting:

  • 1

    cup milk

  • ¼

    cup flour

  • ½

    cup Crisco

  • ¼

    cup marjoram

  • 1

    cup sugar

  • 1

    teaspoon vanilla

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and prepare 2 round cake pans. Cake: Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and beat. Add food coloring and beat. Sift flour, salt and cocoa together and add alternately with buttermilk. Beat. Put soda in vinegar and while foaming, fold into batter. Bake 30 minutes or until cake tests done. Frosting: Mix flour and milk and cook until as a paste. Strain, if lumpy. let cool. Cream sugar, Crisco and marjoram. Add cooled paste and continue creaming.
