White Bread (MOMs)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp shortening
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • 1 pkg fast dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 12 cups flour

Preparation

Step 1

Add the 1/2 cup of water and 1 tsp of sugar to yeast and let stand 10 minutes. Scald milk and add sugar, salt and shortening. Add water cool to lukewarm. Add yeast to cooled milk mixture. Add half the flour and beat with a spoon until smooth. Add rest of the flour gradually adding enough to prevent sticking. When stiff dough roll out on board and knead until a smooth ball. Put in greased bowl. Let rise til double size and then punch down and rise again. Divide into 4 pieces. Cover and rest 10 minutes in balls and put in greased loaf pans. Let rise until double in size. Bake in moderately hot oven. 400 for 30-40 minutes. Yeild 4 one pound loaves.
