Fudge (Dad's recipe)

4 cups sugar
14 1/2 oz evaporated milk
1 cup butter
12 oz (2 cups) semi-sweet chocolate chips
7 oz marshmellow creme
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup nuts (optional)

Butter sides of a heavy 3 quart saucepan. Add sugar, milk & butter. Cook over medium heat to soft ball (236) stirring often. Remove from heat, stir in chocolate until almost melted. Stir in marshmellow creme, vanilla and nuts, beat until chocolate melts.
Pour into buttered dish, score while warm. Cut when firm.
