Homemade "Mrs. Butterworth's" Syrup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 1/4 tsp rum flavoring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt

Preparation

Step 1

Put brown sugar & salt into medium saucepan. Place cornstarch in small bowl or cup and drizzle with about 2 tbs. of water. Stir or whisk with a fork until cornstarch is dissolved, then add it to saucepan along with rest of water.

Stir or whisk constantly over medium-high heat, until the mixture comes to a boil. Boil one minute, still stirring.

Remove saucepan from heat, and let syrup cool completely. When it's cool, stir in the extracts.
