Aunt Irene always made these cookies for Christmas. I loved them!

Ingredients
- FROSTING:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup Crisco
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 3 teaspoons soda (put in buttermilk)
- 1 cup molasses
- 1/2 teaspoon each of cinnamon, ginger, and cloves
- 6 cups flour
- 1-1/2 cups sugar
- 5-1/2 tablespoons water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Preparation
Step 1
Mix together cookie ingredients. Roll up into log.
Chill.
Cut into slices.
Boil frosting ingredients until it spins a thread.
ADD: 1 pkg Knox unflavored Jello in 5-1/2 tablespoons cold water. Pour syrup over and add vanilla and let stand at room temperature a few minutes. Beat until ready to spread. Takes a lot of beating.
HINTS:
Do not soak gelatin ahead.
Boil sugar and water, then dissolve gelatin
Frost and lay out on table until dry
Cookies freeze well
