Ingredients
- FROSTING:
- 1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine
- 2-1/4 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3 cups flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 1 cup (2 sticks) butter
- 1 cup (6 ounce bag) semisweet chocolate chips
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 4-1/4 cups powdered sugar
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour three 8 or 9 inch round cake pans.
Cream the butter in large bowl. Add the sugar and beat well. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Beat in the vanilla. Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Add in thirds to the butter mixture, alternating with thirds of buttermilk. When batter is smooth, divide among the prepared pans.
Bake 20 to 30 minutes, until a toothpick in the middle comes out clean.
Cool and remove from pans.
Meanwhile prepare frosting. In medium saucepan, combine butter, chocolate and buttermilk. Stir over low to medium heat until smooth. Beat in powdered sugar until smooth. Chill 1 hour, then beat until light and fluffy.
Fill and frost cake.
Serves 16.
