Ingredients
- 1/4 cup golden raisins
- 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp. cold butter or margarine
- Vanilla frozen yogurt or ice cream (optional)
- 4 large tart green-skinned apples such as Granny Smith, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
Preparation
Step 1
Spread apples in a 7- by 10-inch oval au gratin pan, 8-inch-square cake pan, or shallow 2-quart casserole. Stir in raisins, 1/4 cup of the sugar, and cinnamon; spread out evenly and set aside.
In a medium-size bowl, stir together flour and remaining 1/4 cup sugar. Using a pastry blander or 2 knives, cut in butter and cheese until mixture resembles coarse meal. Sprinkle mixture evenly over apples.
Bake in a 350°F oven until topping is golden and apples are tender when pierced (about 1 hour). Serve warm or at room temperature; top with frozen yogurt, if desired.
