Ingredients
- CRUST:
- 2 cups flour
- 2/3 cup shortening (1/2 cup lard and remain butter)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 small egg, slightly beaten
- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- 4 tablespoons cold water
- FILLING:
- 3 cups thinly sliced Granny Smith or McIntosh apples
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons butter
- 1/4 teaspoon lemon juice
Preparation
Step 1
Put flour, shortening, and salt into mixing bowl and work with pastry blender until like coarse meal. Mix egg, water and vinegar. Add to flour mixture and mix with a fork until well blended. Divide dough in about ½. Roll out ½ on lightly floured board. Put in pie pan.
To make filling, prepare apples. Mix sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of sugar mixture over bottom of the pie crust. Add a layer of apples, sprinkle with sugar mixture. Add remaining apples and sugar mixture. Dot with butter and dribble with lemon juice over the top.
Bake in 425 degree oven for 15 minutes. Then reduce head to 375 degrees and bake about 30 minutes or until apples are done.
