Halloween - Legend of the Jack-O'-Lantern

By

According to Irish folklore, one Halloween night Jack tricked the devil into promising not to take his soul. When Jack died, the devil kept his promise and refused Jack entrance to the underworld. But Jack wasn't allowed in heaven either. With nowhere to go, Jack was left to wander the earth with a hollowed-out turnip and a burning coal to light his way. Irish children brought the fable and their Halloween lanterns to America, but pumpkins, being in much greater supply, replaced the turnips.
