Ingredients

  • Cookie Dough
  • 1 1/3 c. soft butter or margarine
  • 1-1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 T. ground cinnamon
  • 4 t. ground ginger
  • 1 T. ground cloves
  • 1 T. baking soda
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 5 1/2 cups flour
  • hard candy for windows (sugarless is best)
  • Frosting
  • 4 c. powdered sugar
  • 2-3 T. milk
  • 1/2 c. butter & 1/2 c. margarine
  • or 1 c. Crisco (whitest frosting)
  • 1/2 t. almond extract
  • 1 t. vanilla extract
  • add egg white, if desired); helps frosting to dry

Step 1


Cookie Dough:

Blend butter and sugar. Add eggs, spices and soda. Add water and 5-1/2 c. flour and mix well.

Divide dough into 3 portions. With a well floured rolling pin roll out portion on floured surface. Using patterns cut out all shapes, including windows in house, people, and chimney.

Insert two hard candies in square window openings and one in round windows. Adjust amount according to window size.

Bake on a parchment lined baking sheet for 10-15 minutes in a 350 oven. Do not let edges brown. Cool.

Pack in airtight container until ready to decorate. Cookies will keep two weeks at room temperature of longer in freezer.


Frosting:

Mix ingredients well adding milk a few drops at a time until frosting is medium stiff; add more powdered sugar to make stiffer frosting, if necessary





Assemble Gingerbread House

Sugar cones for trees Green frosting and sprinkles for trees

Green gum drops “Peeps” snowmen

Pretzel sticks


Decorate all pieces before assembling house and scene; use writing tip (#5).

Slice gum drops the long way and flatten slightly for bushes. Use frosting to stick on foundation of house.

Frost sugar cones with green frosting and decorate as desired (one tree for the house)

Frost base (plate, tray or foil covered cardboard) to make snow covered land.

Pipe frosting on base in an L shape with star tip for first two sides of house; frost seam where walls join and stick both walls’ foundation to L shaped frosting base.

Add other walls one at a time; seam walls and foundation.

Place one decorated tree in house.

To add roof, outline tops of all walls; join roof at top and place assembled roof on walls.

Hold several seconds until frosting begins to set.

Assemble chimney and add to roof.

Slice gum drops half-way through and use to stand up gingerbread people. Also a good stand \ for small candy canes.

Use pretzels and frosting blobs to create fence.

Use green gel to squiggle a wreath and decorate. Use frosting to attach to door.

Add other embellishments as desired. Be careful with roof decorations; don’t let it get too heavy.
