Sour Cream Sugar Cookies

These cookies roll and cut easily with cookie cutters and bake flat and even : they are perfect as a base for decorated Christmas cookies.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup soft butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • dash of salt
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon finely-shredded fresh lemon peel
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • plastic wrap

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Beat soft butter with mixer for 30 seconds. Stir in sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and dash of salt. Beat in 1/2 cup sour cream, 1 egg, vanilla, and lemon peel. Beat in about half of the flour, then add the rest. Divide dough in half, cover with plastic wrap, and chill an hour in the frig. On a floured silicon mat, roll dough out 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out with cookie cutters, placing cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 7-8 minutes, until edges are firm, bottoms are very lightly browned. Cool on racks. If desired, spread with icing, and let dry completely before decorating.
