Ingredients

- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
- 1 egg, lightly beaten

- whole maraschino cherries drained
- unwrapped caramels
- chocolates
- mint patties
- pecans
- walnut halves

- frosting;
- 2 cups confectioners sugar
- 1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
- 3/4 tsp vanilla
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- 1-2 drops food coloring
Preparation
Step 1
preheat oven to 375. grease 18 medium muffin cups or line with paper baking cups. combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt in a small bowl; mix well. add buttermilk, butter and egg; blend just until dry ingredients are moistened. fill muffin cups 1/3 full. place a surprise in center of each, pressing down slightly. top with remaining batter, filling cups 2/3 full.
bake 17-22 minutes or until top springs back when lightly touched.
makes 18 cupcakes
frosting;
combine frosting ingredients in a small bowl, mix well, adding enough milk to desired spreading consistency. spread on cooled cupcakes.
