Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sift before measuring
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, firmly packed
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 egg. well beaten
- 3/4 cup sour milk or buttermilk

preheat oven to 375.
in a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt. cut in shortening until mixture looks like coarse meal; remove and set aside 3/4 cup of the mixture for topping. to mixture remaining in mixing bowl, add baking powder and soda. beat in egg and buttermilk, beat until smooth. turn into two greased 8-inch square pans. sprinkle with reserved 3/4 cup toping.
bake 375 for 25 minutes.
