Step 1

preheat oven to 400 degrees

carefully cut an x with sharp paring knife, on flat side of each nut. (if shells are not scored, chestnuts may explode in oven)

place chestnuts in single layer on baking sheet. bake 25-30 minutes until softened and x's are opened.
