Ingredients

  • SOFT PEPPERNUTS:
  • 1 cup syrup (heat)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup margarine
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tsp. Soda dissolved in hot water
  • 1/3 tsp star anise seed
  • 5 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. each cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamon(or mace).
  • HARD PEPPERNUTS:
  • Boil together and cool
  • 2 cups syrup
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 Ib (1 cup) butter or margarine
  • 1/2 lb. (1 cup) lard
  • 1/2 tsp. each cloves, ginger, star Anise, mace
  • Add
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 cup sour milk
  • Flour to roll out

Step 1

SOFT PEPPERNUTS:
This dough is very soft. Roll dough into long thin
rolls, place on a cookie sheet and freeze. When frozen, cut into small pieces. Bake at 350. The kids eat them like candy.

HARD PEPPERNUTS:
This is a large recipe. I make half which takes about 6-7
cups flour. Roll the dough into long rolls about 1/2 inch
in diameter, freeze, then slice and bake at 350 F for about 10 -12 min. depending on your oven. They do not get very brown so you will have to experiment.
