Ingredients
- 1 package yeast
- 1 T. sugar
- 1/3 C. warm water (105-120 degrees F.)
- 6 C. all purpose flour
- 4 T unsalted butter or margarine
- 2 t. salt or to taste
- 1 2/3 C. milk* or water
- 2 loaf pans
Preparation
Step 1
Stir yeast and sugar into warm water in a 2 or 4 C liquid measure & let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
Mix flour, butter and salt until combined.
Stir milk or water into yeast mixture. Kneed for 10 minutes.
Remove dough & shape into a smooth ball. Place in a lightly flouried 1 or 2-gallon plastic food storage bag. Squeeze out the air & close with a wire twist, allowing room for the dough to rise.
Let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours. If necessary, divide dough into required number of portions and shape each piece into a loaf pan. Place in greased loaf pan(s); cover with oiled plastic wrap & let rise until he center(s) is 1 1/2 inches above rim of the pan(s), aboutg 1 1/2 hours.
Preheat oven to 375 degress for about 30 minutes.
Bake in the center of the preheated oven until they are well-browned & sound hollow when tapped.
*Milk makes a richer loaf with a well-browned crust.
