Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup margarine or butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 egg, separated
  • 1/2 teas vanilla
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 teas salt
  • 3/4 cup finely chopped nuts
  • Jelly or Icing

Preparation

Step 1

Heat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix brown sugar, margarine, shortening, egg yolk and vanilla.
Stir in flour and salt.
Shape dough into 1 inch balls.
Beat egg white slightly.
Dip balls into egg white, then roll in nuts.
Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet, press thum deeply into center of each cookie.
Bake until light brown, about 10 minutes.
Remove immediately from cookie sheet and cool.

Fill thumbprints with jelly or icing.

Makes about 3 dozen.
