Apples and berries combine with sweet, subtle spices to give a warming dessert for cool winter nights.
Yield: 4 servings
kg Eating apples of your choice (I used Royal Gala)
Cinnamon stick broken into two pieces
150g Rolled oats
Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 4.
Wash the blackberries and remove any leaves and stalks.
Core and cut the apples into quarters, then halve again.
Heat the butter in a heat proof casserole dish until foaming, add the apples, spices and sugar and fry until golden.
Remove from the heat.
Add the blackberries and stir until some of the juice is released.
Meanwhile make the topping. Put the butter and flour in a bowl and rub together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, add the sugar and oats and mix well.
Scatter the topping over the fruit and bake for 30 minutes or until bubbling and golden.
Serve with custard, cream or creme fraiche.

Actually it’s star anise, a very fragrant and warming spice.

It looks good, except for what looks like a spider in the middle! I realize it’s not a spider, but ewwww.
