| 4 | tablespoons butter |
| 3 | tablespoons flour |
| ¼ | teaspoon garlic powder or 1 clove crushed |
| 2 | cups skim milk |
| ½ | teaspoon salt |
| ¼ | teaspoons pepper |
| ¼ | teaspoons powdered thyme or 3 spriges fresh thyme |
| 1 | bay leaf |
| 1 | cup gruyere cheese (optional) |
1. Melt the butter in a saucepan and remove from burner
2. Add flour and stir until smooth
3. Slowly add milk, stirring slowly until smooth
4. Return the pan to the burner.
5. Add salt, pepper, thyme, garlic and bay leaf
6. Bring to a boil, stirring to prevent scorching
7. Simmer 5 minutes or until mixture has thickened
