Baklava Bars
Sad but true: I have an unstamped passport. I’ve never been out of the United States, but it’s certainly not because I haven’t wanted to visit other nations; the stars just haven’t aligned yet. For the record, Greece is near the tippy-top of my list of places I’d love to see, and that’s mostly because of their cuisine.
I know baklava may have its origins elsewhere, but I always associate it with Greek food. I’m slowly summoning the motivation to tackle making a real, authentic batch of the stuff. It’s so flaky and spicy and sweet and crunchy and buttery–what’s not to love? In the meantime, I’ve stumbled upon something that will suffice quite nicely.
These bars, consisting of a cookie base, a layer of nuts, and a sweet glaze, are truly wonderful. I found it particularly difficult to take pictures of them because the smell was so alluring. In fact, and the grease on my camera is proof of this, I caved and ate a slab as I took these pictures. Butter, nuts, cinnamon, and honey–come on. Don’t tell me you wouldn’t have done the same thing.
