Hawaiian Pizza Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
It’s rich, creamy, decadent, and comforting… but it can also have a place in a healthy diet. Some (feta, chevre, Parmesan, etc.) are naturally lower in calories and fat whereas others (cheddar, monterey jack, mozzarella etc.) can be made with part-skim or reduced fat milk to lower their calorie and fat content.
I have many types of cheeses stocked in the fridge at any given time, but blocks of both reduced fat cheddar and part-skim mozzarella are almost always among them.
For this recipe, I’m bringing together two classic cheesy favorites – pizza and grilled cheese sandwiches – with cheddar and mozzarella. I considered keeping things simple by making basic pizza grilled cheese sandwiches, but I was inspired by my favorite homemade pizza and ultimately decided to make Hawaiian Pizza Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.
If you’re unfamiliar with this type of pizza, the classic ingredients (in addition to those typical of pizza) are pineapple and ham. My husband and I like to add jalapeno slices and granulated garlic to the pizza for an added flavor kick.
The combination of flavors may sound strange, but trust me, they really work together! Sweet, savory, spicy, and all-around downright delicious, this sandwich is definitely a cheesy experience you will want to partake in.
